Welcome to Wednesday’s words! What a great way to start the first blog post for the Floral Gallery of Marlborough than to spotlight the Daffodil. This flower symbolizes new beginnings and as we begin to post weekly you will find tips and advice on how to care for your cut flower arrangements, suggestions for indoor plants for your home or office as well as great gift ideas for a holiday or special event along with bunches of information on your favorite flowers and plants.
Daffodil is the common name
The daffodil or Jonquil are the common names for a genus of plants known as Narcissus. These perennial flowering spring flowers grow from a bulb that is traditionally planted in the fall and lies dormant through the winter. When the flower blooms in the Spring it arrives in many shades of yellow and white, but with over 40 varieties of Narcissus they can also be found in orange, salmon, peach and pink as well. When planted outside many varieties of Daffodils are naturalizers, meaning they will spread and fill a garden space and as an added bonus the deer will shy away from the blooms leaving little damage to the Spring colors.
Origins of the flower
Narcissus is derived from the Greek word, Narke meaning numbness. Greek mythology tells the tale of the lad, Narcissus who was so enamored of his reflection in the water that he pined away until he died (hence the word Narcissist). Whether the lad was named for the flower or the flower for the lad, where his body passed the Narcissus flower bloomed.
Looking for local blooms
If you are looking for blooming Daffodils, look for the flowers to show their colors in late Spring. In Marlborough you can find many daffodils along the Assabet Rail Trail as volunteers have been planting thousands of the bulbs along the trail from Marlborough to Maynard as part of their Trail of Flowers project
Tete a Tete Daffodils (miniature flowers) are one of the easiest ways to bring these Spring flowers into your home or office. Check out The Floral Gallery’s “Petite Daffodil Trio”. The best part is that these perennial flowers can be planted outside in your garden and they will bloom again to give you flowers the next Spring. Daffodils are the National flower of Wales, the symbol of the American Cancer Society and the Official flower for the month of March.
